Located in the museum extension designed by Christian de Portzamparc, the research department is open to students, art professionals, researchers and amateurs, by appointment only.

The research department offers:
- a specialist and generalist library about sculpture, composed of a document collection that comes partly from the sculptor’s family, the publications of the Musée Bourdelle since its creation, and catalogues for themed and monographic exhibitions dedicated to the sculptor’s work, at the museum or extra muros, in France and abroad.
- a research and documentation collection: artwork records and themed records.
- the Musée Bourdelle’s various archive collections, which can be consulted at the documentation centre.
